Pentecost, or "The Descent of the Holy Spirit" illuminated manuscript from the Psalter of Eleanor of Aquitaine, high-quality pigment ink print on 100% cotton, deckled edge A4-size paper. Digitally restored and carefully gilded by hand using golden pigment ink from Japan, by Cara of Seraphim Print Studio.

✨ The original work is from the Psalter of Eleanor of Aquitaine, created in Normandy, France, circa 1180, for her highness during her British reign. The Psalter is currently held in the collection of the National Library of the Netherlands.

👑 Eleanor of Aquitaine is regarded as the most powerful woman of the 12th Century. In her storied lifetime she was the Duchess of Aquitaine, Queen of France, and Queen of England. During her French reign, she was a participant in the Second Crusade alongside husband King Louis VII. For a woman of her time, she was extraordinarily influential in ecclesiastical and political matters.

✨ This book was commissioned for the edification of an absolutely remarkable historical figure, and my reproductions seek to bring its luminous pages back to life - to connect our celebration of Christ's life to Eleanor's and all brave Christians before us.

🎨 A "psalter" is a book of Psalms typically made for nobility, and often includes other devotional material and imagery "illuminated" using gold or silver leafing. The pages or "leaves" of original medieval psalters were made of vellum, a paper material made from animal skin. For the purposes of print-quality and stability, my reproductions are on handmade 100% cotton paper with a deckled (or torn) edge to retain an old-world aesthetic.

📐 A4 paper is 8.27 inches by 11.69 inches - very close to US letter size. My recommendation is to use an 11x14 floating frame so the deckled edges can be seen, or a matte to accommodate standard US frame sizes. A4 frames are available affordably and in abundance on Amazon as well.

‼️ Please note that because the paper is handmade, the original works are almost 900 years old, and the gold pigment is tediously applied by hand in my studio, the appearance of each piece will vary. Some of the original art pieces had small tears in them or were not perfectly square, so you may notice those details on your print. Regardless, those variables and flaws do not detract from the beauty of the subjects, but emphasize the age and charm.

💌 Prints will ship securely via USPS in a plastic sleeve with a thick backing board in a rigid mailer.
